Immortality is two related ideas, and people slide between them. First, it is the state of never dying — living forever, as gods do in stories. Second, and this is how the word is often used in real life, it is being remembered forever: a writer or a film “achieves immortality” when the name outlives the person. In that looser use, the person still dies; the memory does not. The word is a little grand. Everyday English often just says “live forever” for the first sense.

組成From Latin immortālitās, through Old French and Middle English. Morphologically immortal + -ity (the state of). Immortal itself is im- (not) + mortal (able to die).
