Immolation is the act of killing someone, or destroying something, by burning — often as a sacrifice, or as a public protest. The phrase students see most is self-immolation: a person setting their own body on fire to make a desperate political or religious point. It is a grave, formal word, used in news, history, and religion, not at the dinner table.
