Imbecility is the noun for extreme stupidity — the quality, or a stupid act — not the person. You might hear “the imbecility of that plan” or “an act of imbecility.” The person is an imbecile; the describing word is imbecilic; imbecility is the stupidity itself. It is formal, old-sounding, and . Though actually, like imbecile, it was once used as a cold medical word. That use is dead in decent speech. Today it is a heavy way to call an idea or a piece of behaviour extremely stupid. In ordinary talk, people just say “that was so stupid.”
