    When a group of people or things is ill-assorted, they do not seem to belong together. The mix feels wrong: the pieces do not match in kind, taste, age, style, or purpose. You might say an ill-assorted bunch of guests at a party, or an ill-assorted pile of furniture in a room. People also use it for a pair who do not seem to fit as partners. The word is a little old-fashioned and a little ; in everyday talk someone might just say they don't go together. The ill- here does not mean sick. It is the older adverb ill, meaning badly — badly matched, badly grouped.
