An igloo is a house built from blocks of hard snow or ice, packed so they make a round, low shelter. The famous picture is a dome on the snow, with a small tunnel for a door. Inuit peoples of the Arctic built them as winter shelters, often for hunting trips, not always as a forever home. Though actually, in the language the word comes from, it just meant house — any house, not only a snow one. English borrowed it and narrowed it to the snow-block building. You will meet the word in school books, cartoons, and travel films. It is a real working shelter, not an ice castle from a fairy tale, though children sometimes play at making an igloo from sofa cushions.
組成From Inuktitut ᐃᒡᓗ (a house or building of any kind), from older Inuit and Eskimo roots with the same “house” meaning. English kept the word but used it mainly for the snow-block house.
