- 1
If a place or a time is idyllic, it is very beautiful, happy, and peaceful, with no trouble in sight. An idyllic childhood, an idyllic island, an idyllic afternoon. The word paints a picture: sun, quiet, safety. People use it to praise how perfect something felt. Though actually, they also use it when they know the picture is too neat — “It looked idyllic, but…” is a very common shape. It is not a children’s playground word; it belongs to stories, travel writing, and grown-up talk. It is warmer than peaceful and dreamier than nice.
