To idolize someone is to admire and love them so much that you treat them as perfect. You put them high in your mind, as if they could not do anything wrong. People often idolize singers, actors, sports stars, or sometimes a parent or a teacher. The feeling can be warm and real, but the word also carries a small warning: this has gone past ordinary liking. Grown-ups sometimes say it with a little shake of the head, as if the person has lost a bit of sense. You idolize a person, not usually a thing, though people do say they idolize a way of life. In British spelling you will also see idolise; it is the same verb.
