An idler is a person who does not work, or who tries hard not to work. The word is unkind. If you call someone an idler, you are saying they are lazy on purpose — not that they are tired, ill, or looking for a job and cannot find one. It sounds a little old now. People still understand it, especially in books, but in everyday talk you are more likely to hear lazy, or “he just sits around.” Teachers and grandparents may use it when they want to scold. Though actually, in machines an idler can also mean a wheel that turns but does not drive anything; that is a different meaning, and not the person-word you are learning here.
