An ident is a short clip — often with a piece of music — that tells you which radio station or television channel you are on. It sits between programmes: the logo, the tune, the two-second “this is the news channel.” People who make programmes say ident the way other people say “the channel’s little song.” It is a form of identification. Outside a studio, everyday talk more often says ID or “the logo.” You will meet ident in media English, especially British; American writers often say station ID instead. Though actually, it is not your ID card, and it is not a long ad for the next show. It is the tiny name-stamp between one programme and the next.
