IBM is a very large American computer company that works all over the world. The letters stand for International Business Machines. It makes machines and programs, especially for businesses, banks, and governments — not mainly the laptop you buy for home. People still nickname it Big Blue, from the company’s blue look. Though actually, the IBM many parents remember — the company that put a personal computer in offices in the 1980s — is only part of the story now. IBM sold its personal-computer line years ago; those ThinkPad laptops went to Lenovo. Today IBM is more about big company computers, software, and helping other companies with computer work. The name is formal. In speech everyone just says the three letters. You do not need the full name unless you are being extra clear. IBM is a company, not the word for “a computer.”
