An ibis is a large bird that walks in shallow water and wet ground. It has long legs and a long . The usually curves down, which helps it feel for food in mud. Books often say it is related to the , and that is a fair picture: the same kind of tall, quiet water bird, not a duck and not a chicken. There are many kinds of ibis, in Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. In old Egypt the ibis was a holy bird. Though actually, when people in Taiwan use the Chinese name, they may be picturing two different birds: the crested ibis, a rare East Asian bird people work hard to save, or the African sacred ibis, a white ibis that now lives wild in parts of Taiwan and is often in the news as a newcomer. In English, both are kinds of ibis. The word belongs in nature books and zoo signs, not in the kitchen.
組成English took it from Latin ībis, from Ancient Greek îbis, from an Egyptian name for the bird (hbj; later Coptic had hibōi or hip). In the Wycliffe Bible it appeared as ybyn or ibin; from the 1500s English used ibys, then ibis.
