IATA is the International Air Transport Association: a big club of airlines, not of governments. Airlines join so they can agree on practical rules that let them work together — tickets, bags, safety habits, and the papers that move a passenger from one company to another. You have already used IATA even if you have never said the name. The three-letter codes on boarding passes (TPE for Taoyuan, NRT for Narita) are IATA airport codes; airlines have IATA codes too. Though actually, people often say “IATA” when they only mean those codes, but the organisation is wider than a list of letters. It is not the same as ICAO, which is the countries’ air body linked to the UN. IATA is the airlines talking to each other; ICAO is countries writing air law. In Taiwan you will see both names in the news, but mostly meet IATA on tickets and luggage tags.
組成An acronym: the first letters of International Air Transport Association, said as “eye-AH-tuh”.
