Think of -ian as a small tag you stick on the end of a place or a subject, and the whole thing turns into a person: Canada + -ian = Canadian, history + -ian = historian, music + -ian = musician. The tag says 'one of these' or 'the one who does this'.

A male given name from Scottish Gaelic Eòin, equivalent to English John.
