Hyundai is a large group of companies from South Korea. Most English learners meet the name on cars: Hyundai makes and sells cars in many countries. The wider group has also built ships, put up buildings and roads, sold electronics, and worked in money services and shops. In everyday English, “a Hyundai” almost always means a Hyundai car, unless you are reading business news. The name comes from Korean 현대, meaning “modern times” or “the present age.” The car company took that name from the bigger Hyundai Group it used to belong to. English speakers do not all say the name the same way; you will hear something like “HUN-day,” while the Korean is closer to “hyuhn-dae.”
