The name comes from Korean 현대, meaning “modern times” or “the present age.” The car company took that name from the bigger Hyundai Group it used to belong to. English speakers do not all say the name the same way; you will hear something like “HUN-day,” while the Korean is closer to “hyuhn-dae.”
