Hypothetically means “in a made-up situation” or “if we imagine this is true.” You often put it at the front: “Hypothetically, if the bus didn’t come…” It tells your listener you are not reporting a real plan or a real fact — you are thinking out loud about a possible world. People also use it to talk about touchy things without promising they will do them. Though actually, that trick does not always work; the other person may still think you mean it. The word is a little formal. Friends more often say “just say” or “suppose.”
