In a right-angled triangle — one corner is exactly 90 degrees — the hypotenuse is the longest side. It sits opposite the right angle, stretching across from one of the other two corners to the other. You meet it in school maths, in Pythagoras, and in anything that measures a diagonal across a square corner. It is a specialist word, not a word for daily chat; in class, though, it is the ordinary name for that side. Though actually, people sometimes point at any long side and call it the hypotenuse, even when there is no right angle. Without the right angle, the name does not apply.
