Hypnosis is a special, very relaxed, sleep-like state where a person's mind becomes more open to suggestion — someone (a hypnotist) can sometimes guide them to relax, focus, or change a habit while they are in this state. People sometimes try hypnosis to help them quit smoking or feel less nervous, and you also see it used as entertainment in stage shows.
