A shop that is even bigger than a supermarket — so big it is almost a supermarket and a department store under one roof. You can buy food, clothes, a fan, and things for the house in the same trip, and people usually drive there. The English word copies French hypermarché. Though actually, in daily talk many people never say hypermarket at all: they name the store, or they just say the big supermarket. The word is more at home in business writing, and in some countries, than in American conversation, where superstore is often the closer everyday cousin. It is still the right word when you need to mark the extra-large, out-of-town kind of shop.
