A hymen is a thin bit of skin at the opening of the vagina. Old books often say it belongs to girls or women who have not had sex, and that it 'breaks' the first time they do. That is the tidy story, and bodies are messier. For most people it is not a closed door. It is more like a soft ring or a small fold, and it already has a gap, because monthly blood needs a way out. Some people are born with very little of it. It can stretch or tear from sport, from a tampon, from a doctor's check, or from sex — or it may hardly change. So you cannot read a person's sexual life from it, and using it as 'proof' has hurt a lot of girls. Doctors still need the word: it is a body part, not a moral test. It is a private, medical kind of word. Speak about it calmly, never as a joke or a test of someone.
