Hygienic means clean in the way that keeps germs from spreading — not just tidy or pretty. A hygienic kitchen, a hygienic hospital, hygienic food handling: the surfaces, the water, the way people wash their hands, all make it harder for bacteria and viruses to move from one place to another. You can also say a product is hygienic (hygienic packaging, a hygienic bin). It is a slightly formal, public-health kind of word; at home people more often just say clean. Though actually, hygienic is about stopping infection, not about being “healthy” in the gym sense, and a place can look nice and still not be hygienic if the cloth is dirty or the water is unsafe.
