A hyena is a wild animal that looks a bit like a dog — strong shoulders, a thick neck, and often a back — but it is not a dog. Scientists put hyenas closer to cats and than to wolves. They live in Africa and parts of Asia, hunt as well as eat what other animals leave, and they have very strong jaws, strong enough to crack big bones. The spotted hyena is the one famous for a call that sounds like a human laugh; not every kind of hyena “laughs,” and they make many other sounds too. People sometimes use hyena as an insult for someone who laughs at another person’s trouble, which is unfair to the animal. The word is ordinary enough in documentaries and stories; you do not need it for daily city life in Taiwan.
組成From Middle English hiena / hyene, from Old French, from Latin hyaena, from Ancient Greek húaina. English once had its own word nihtgenge, “night walker,” but the Greek–Latin name won.
