A hyacinth is a garden plant that flowers in spring. It grows from a bulb. The flowers are small bells packed up a thick stem — blue, pink, or white — and the smell is strong and sweet, almost too sweet in a small room. People grow them in gardens and in pots, sometimes in water so you can see the white roots. It is not the same plant as a or a lilac, even when the colour is close. In everyday English, hyacinth almost always means this flower. The name comes, through Latin, from a Greek word for several dark-blue flowers; English put back a more Latin look in the 1500s. There is an old Greek story of a youth called Hyacinthus, and a flower said to spring from his blood — that is the name’s story, not a gardening fact.
組成From Middle English jacinth, partly from Old French jacincte, from Medieval Latin jacintus, and partly from Old English iacinþ, from Medieval Latin jacinthus, both from Latin hyacinthus, from Ancient Greek hyakinthos (several dark-blue flowers), from an older Mediterranean language we cannot name. English put the Latin-looking form hyacinth back in the 1500s. The personal name is from Latin Hyacinthus, from the same Greek name.
