Hussy is an old, name for a woman. People used it when they thought she was sexually — too free with men — or, a little more lightly in older talk, too bold and cheeky. It is not a neutral word and not a kind one. A woman would not choose it for herself. You will mostly meet it in older books, or when someone is copying that old voice on purpose. It did not start ugly. It is what became as the sounds wore down; the meaning then slid from woman of the house toward woman we of. Later, people built again from house + wife, so the two words are a pair from the same compound. The traditional pronunciation is HUH-zee; saying it with a clear s is a later spelling pronunciation. Do not use it about a real person.

組成From earlier hussive / hussif, the regular worn-down form of Middle English houswyf (housewife), house + wife. Modern housewife is that compound put back together after the old form had become hard to hear, and after the meaning had turned sour. Housewife is a doublet. Traditional pronunciation /ˈhʌzi/; the /s/ pronunciation follows the spelling.
