A room goes hushed when everyone stops and waits: for a speaker, for news, for a name to be read out. You will hear hushed voices, hushed tones, a hushed crowd. It is not empty silence, like a cave at night. It is people holding the noise down on purpose. Softer and more careful than the everyday word quiet.
