1. 1

Hushed means quiet because people are being careful. Voices are hushed when people talk softly — they are listening, waiting to hear something, or they do not want to be overheard. A room goes hushed when everyone stops and waits: for a speaker, for news, for a name to be read out. You will hear hushed voices, hushed tones, a hushed crowd. It is not empty silence, like a cave at night. It is people holding the noise down on purpose. Softer and more careful than the everyday word quiet. Ordinary English; a little literary in a line like “the hall fell hushed.”
