Hungary is a country in the middle of Europe. Austria sits on its west side, Romania on its east. The capital is Budapest — really two old towns, Buda and Pest, facing each other across the river . About ten million people live there. English says Hungarian for the people and for the language; Hungarians call themselves Magyar in their own language. Though actually, Hungarian is not a cousin of German, English, or the Slavic languages all around it, so it sounds surprisingly unlike its neighbours. From 1945 to 1989 Hungary was one of the Communist countries of Eastern Europe. In 1956, people tried to make the government more open; the army of the Soviet Union came in and stopped it, and the world was shocked. In 1989 that system fell, and Hungary later joined the European Union. The English name is not a joke about food, however much it looks like hungry.
