Humph is a small sound people make when they do not believe something, or do not like it. It is not a full word with a meaning you can point to; it is the sound of doubt — a short 'I don't think so' or 'well, that's not right.' In stories it is written humph; in real life it often comes out as a little hum through the nose, sometimes with a closed mouth. On the page it can feel old-fashioned, like something a older person in a book would say. Though actually, people still make the sound; they just do not always write it down. Writers also use it as a verb: to humph, meaning to make that sound.
