A Hummer is a large American car built to travel over rough ground. It sits high, looks boxy and heavy, and takes up a lot of road. The name is a brand, so people usually write it with a capital H. The civilian car grew out of a US army vehicle people called a Humvee; for a time the Hummer was also a city status car — loud, thirsty for petrol, hard to park. Some people now use Hummer loosely for any huge American SUV of that shape, even if the badge is different. In this sense it is the car, not a person who hums, and not a hummingbird.
