A humdinger is something unusually good, exciting, or strong — often a game, a show, a storm, or a loud argument. Informal and a bit old-fashioned-cheerful; you hear it in US English especially, and in sports talk. 'That match was a humdinger' means it was a cracker: close, loud, worth watching. Though actually, it can be any stand-out thing, not only games — a humdinger of a headache is a very bad one, and a humdinger of a story is one you will remember.
