A huckleberry is a small dark-blue fruit that grows on a bush in North America. It looks a lot like a , and people mix the two up all the time; they are close, but they are not the same fruit. Huckleberries more often grow wild than on farms, so in American talk they feel local and a bit rustic. The word is American; British English hardly uses it. Most meet it first as a name: Huckleberry Finn is the boy in the famous book, and his first name is this fruit. In old American speech people sometimes said “I’m your huckleberry” to mean “I am the right person for this,” which is a playful stretch and has nothing to do with eating berries. The name probably comes from an older English fruit word, whortleberry (Middle English hurtilbery), that changed shape after it crossed the ocean in the 1660s.
