Hubris is too much pride — the kind that makes a person feel above the rules, and that often comes before a fall. English borrowed it as a learned word from Ancient Greek ὕβρις (húbris), which meant ; in Greek it could even mean a cruel insult or outrage, not only a feeling inside. Writers still use it for leaders, companies, or tragic heroes who . It is a , serious word, more at home in essays and news commentary than in the playground. Pronounce it HYOO-briss. The usual extra form is hubristic.
