HUAC was the House Un-American Activities Committee, a committee of the US House of Representatives. From the late 1930s through the 1950s — and especially in the early 1950s, in the climate people call McCarthyism — it held public hearings to hunt for people it said were communists or otherwise “un-American”: film writers, actors, government staff, teachers, military officers, and other well-known names. Witnesses were pressed to name friends. Careers were ruined; some people went to prison for refusing to answer. Though actually, Senator Joseph McCarthy sat in the Senate, not on HUAC; the two often get mixed up because they belonged to the same scare. HUAC was later and then shut down in the 1970s; it is not a living US office. You say the letters: H-U-A-C. This is history and , not everyday chat.
