1. 1

A hovercraft is a vehicle that rides on a fat cushion of air its engines blow down under it. It does not fly high like a plane, and it does not sit deep in the water like an ordinary boat. The air lifts it just off the surface, so it can move over water, mud, ice, or fairly flat land. The name began as a British company trademark (Saunders-Roe); now it is the ordinary word, though older writing may still give it a capital H. It is not a helicopter, and it is not a — those stay up in other ways. You see them as ferries, rescue craft, or military vehicles more than as everyday cars.
