If you are housebound, you cannot reasonably leave your house, most often because you are ill, recovering, or old and not steady on your feet. It is not the same as choosing to stay in. A housebound person may still have visitors, and help may come to the door. The word is a little formal: doctors, social workers, and news reports use it. Bound here means held, not free to go. Though actually, a day on the sofa because you cannot be bothered is not being housebound. The word carries a real limit, not a mood, and it is not a rude word — but do not use it lightly about someone who simply prefers to stay home.
