- 1
House-to-house means doing something by going to one house, then the next, then the next, through a street or a whole area. Police may make house-to-house inquiries after a crime — they knock and ask if anyone saw anything. , census workers, and people looking for a lost pet also go house-to-house. You can put it before a noun (house-to-house searches) or after a verb (they went house-to-house). It sounds a little like the news. Though actually, in everyday talk people often say door-to-door for the same idea, especially for selling. The phrase is recorded from around 1855–1860.
