To house-sit is to stay in someone's home and look after it while they are away: bring in the post, water the plants, make the place look lived-in, and often feed a pet. You are not there for a holiday party; you are there so the house is not empty. It was built the same way as — sit here means stay and watch over something. It can be a favour for a friend or a small paid job. The person who does it is a house-sitter. Though actually, sleeping in an empty flat without being asked to care for it is just staying there, not house-sitting.
house-sit 是住進別人家裡，在主人外出時幫忙看家，包括收信、澆花、讓屋子看起來有人住，有時也餵寵物。它和 babysit 的造詞方式一樣，sit 在這裡是「留下來看顧」的意思。可以是朋友之間的幫忙，也可以是有報酬的小工作，做這件事的人叫 house-sitter。如果只是借住在空屋裡，沒有人請你照顧，那就只是住在那裡，不叫 house-sit。
