    To house-sit is to stay in someone's home and look after it while they are away: bring in the post, water the plants, make the place look lived-in, and often feed a pet. You are not there for a holiday party; you are there so the house is not empty. It was built the same way as — sit here means stay and watch over something. It can be a favour for a friend or a small paid job. The person who does it is a house-sitter. Though actually, sleeping in an empty flat without being asked to care for it is just staying there, not house-sitting.
