A hotbed is a place where a lot of one kind of activity keeps happening, especially something bad or violent: a hotbed of crime, a hotbed of unrest. The word paints the place as warm soil where that activity grows fast. News writing uses it a lot. Though actually, people also stretch it to good or neutral growth — a hotbed of talent, a hotbed of new ideas. The “especially bad” sense is the one you will meet first in books, but it is not the only one in real talk. It is not a bed that is hot to sleep in.

組成From hot + bed. First a garden bed kept warm so plants grow quickly; the “place where something grows fast” meaning comes from that.
