To hot-wire a vehicle is to start the engine by joining the ignition wires (or touching them to the right contacts) instead of using a key. You will meet it in crime stories, films, and news about stolen cars. It is informal. Though actually, many newer cars will not start without the right key, so they are much harder to hot-wire than old ones; the word still appears, sometimes a little loosely, for any trick that starts a car without the proper key. Hot here is electrician-talk for “live” — carrying current — not “high temperature.”
「hot-wire a vehicle」指不用鑰匙，直接把點火線接在一起，或碰到正確的接點，把引擎發動。這個字常在犯罪故事、電影和偷車新聞裡出現，屬於口語。
新車通常一定要正確鑰匙才能發動，所以比舊車難 hot-wire。不過這個字有時也被用得比較鬆，指任何不用正確鑰匙發動車的方法。這裡的「熱」是電工的說法，指帶電，不是高溫。
