British and informal: when a situation — a race, a competition, an argument — becomes more or more intense. 'The election is hotting up.' No object. Though actually, most speakers today, and almost all Americans, say 'heat up' for this; 'hot up' sounds British and a little old-style, so learn to RECOGNIZE it more than to use it.
