If someone is hospitalized, they are taken into a hospital and kept there for treatment — not just a short visit to a doctor. We hospitalize a person; more often we hear it the other way round: she was hospitalized after the crash. In American English this is the usual word. In British English people more often say she was taken to hospital or she is in hospital, though they may write hospitalise with an s. It sounds a little official: news and medical notes use it more than friends chatting. Though actually, speakers sometimes stretch it. They may say hospitalized for a night in the emergency room even when the hospital only watched the person and did not really keep them in as a patient.

組成hospital + -ize (to put into / to make). The ending turns the place into a verb: to put someone in a hospital. It is a piecewise doublet of hotelize — the two verbs are built the same way from related old words for an inn.
