    Horseradish is a plant. We eat the root, which is white inside and very hot — it hits your nose more than a hits your tongue. People grate it into a sharp sauce, often with roast beef. It is not the mild in soup, and it is not the green paste you get with sushi, though the hot feeling is in the same neighbourhood of taste. The horse in the name is probably the old use of horse to mean strong or coarse, not because horses eat it.
