Horrifying describes something extremely bad — so bad it you or upsets you deeply. A horrifying accident, a horrifying crime, horrifying news. You can also use it for things that are not dangerous but still feel sharply wrong: a horrifying waste of money, horrifying manners. It is the cause, not the feeling: the film is horrifying; the people watching it are horrified. Though actually, in everyday talk people reach for it when they mainly mean “very bad and I hate it”, even if nobody is truly scared. It still sounds strong. It is heavier than bad or awful, so if you use it for a small thing, it can sound like you are making a drama.
