A horde is a huge crowd moving together in a messy, noisy way — too many people, not quite in control. on the first morning of a sale, fans pouring out of a stadium, tourists around a famous statue: newspapers love the word because it makes the crowd feel a little wild, a little like an army that has stopped being an army. It can sound if you stick it on a group of people you do not like; it paints them as a mass, not as persons. Long ago it named a Turkic or camp-army, a court on the move. That old meaning still sits under the new one, which is why a horde feels more restless than a mere crowd. People also stretch it to animals (a horde of ) and even to emails. The noun is what you will meet; a verb exists but is uncommon.

Via French, German and Polish from Russian orda 'horde, clan', probably from Kipchak Turkic.

組成English took it in the 1500s from French horde, from German Horde, from Polish horda, from Russian орда (ordá, a clan or troop). That probably came from a Kipchak Turkic word, and further back from Proto-Turkic *ordu, a place where an army or a ruler stays. Turkish ordu still means camp or army. It is a doublet of the rarer English orda and of Urdu, the language name — Urdu once meant the language of the camp.
