Honshu is the largest of Japan's four main islands. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and most of Japan's biggest cities sit on it. If someone names those cities, they mean this island, even if they never say Honshu. The name is Japanese: hon means “main” and shū here is a word for a province or island, so the whole name is “the main island.” The other three main islands are Hokkaido, , and . Though actually, Honshu is not another name for Japan — it is one island inside the country, the crowded middle of it.
