Honorary describes a title or position given to someone as a mark of respect, rather than because they did the normal work or met the normal requirements for it. An "honorary degree" is given to someone a university admires, even though they didn't study there. An "honorary member" of a club gets the title as a gift of respect, not by going through the usual process. The person holding an honorary title usually doesn't do the actual job that comes with it — the title itself is the honor.
