Honolulu is the capital city of Hawaii. It sits on the island of Oahu — not the biggest Hawaiian island, but the one with the main harbour, the government, and most of the visitors. People know it for the sea, the weather, and , and though actually it is not only a holiday picture: it is a real port and a centre of trade.
Hawaii is the state (and the whole chain of islands). Honolulu is one city on one island. If a plane “lands in Hawaii” for most , it lands here.
組成From Hawaiian Honolulu: hono (“bay, harbour”; cognate with Māori whanga) + lulu (“shelter”; cognate with Māori ruru). The name means a sheltered bay — fitting for a harbour city. See also the New Zealand place name Whangaruru.
