This is a very offensive word for a gay person. It is a form of homosexual, and it has been used as an insult — to mock, to hurt, to push someone outside the group. Do not use it. If you hear it, it is not a neutral label and not a scientific one; it is meant to sting. Older speakers and bullies used it more; careful speakers avoid it. There is a completely different Homo in science class: Homo sapiens, where Homo is Latin for “human.” There is also the prefix homo- meaning “the same,” as in . Those are not this word. This entry is only the slur. If you need a kind word, say gay, or lesbian, or the words the person uses for themselves.
