A homburg is a soft felt hat for men, with a dent running along the top of the crown and a brim that is a little stiff, usually bound with a ribbon. It looks smarter than a hat, but softer than a hard top hat. Though actually, people often mix it up with a fedora: a homburg has that single crease and a bound brim; a fedora is at the front and often has a brim you can snap down. Politicians and well-dressed men wore homburgs in the first half of the twentieth century; you still see them in old photographs when someone wants to look important. The hat is named after Bad Homburg in Germany, where it was first worn. It is a slightly old-fashioned, special-occasion word now — most people just say hat.
