A Holstein is a dairy cow — the kind kept for milk, not mainly for meat. Most of the ones you picture are black and white in big, uneven patches, though actually some Holsteins are red and white instead; people still call those Holsteins. Farmers like them because they give a lot of milk. You also hear it as an adjective: a Holstein cow, a Holstein herd. Breeders often say Holstein-Friesian, because the animals come from Friesland and from Holstein in northern Germany. In everyday talk, Holstein just means that familiar milk cow. It is a farm and food word, not a fancy one, and it takes a capital H because it began as a place name.
組成Named after Holstein in northern Germany. An old tribe there were the Holsten / Holtsaten, equal to German Holz (“wood”) + Sassen (“inhabitant”), or Low German Holt + Saten — people of the woods. The cows were named for that area and nearby Friesland; horses from Schleswig-Holstein were named for the region too.
