In everyday English, a lot of people say Holland when they mean the whole country whose capital is Amsterdam — the Netherlands. Maps and careful speakers use the Netherlands for the country. Holland, strictly, is only a part of it: two provinces on the west, North Holland and South Holland, where Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague sit. That part was rich and famous in trade, so started using Holland for the whole land, and the habit stuck. Some Dutch people mind; some do not. The government has asked the world to say the Netherlands. In Taiwan you already have one everyday name, 荷蘭, for the country, and that is what people actually say. The English name Holland comes from Old Dutch holt lant, “wood land.” People sometimes guess “hollow land,” because the country is low and flat, but that is a popular wrong story, not the real origin.
