To hoick something is to pull it or lift it up with a sudden, rather rough movement — not a slow, careful lift. You hoick a bag onto your shoulder; you hoick up your socks or your trousers when they have slipped down. It is informal, and you hear it more in British English than in American English. It often takes a little word after it, especially up: hoick it up. The movement is quick and a bit , closer to a than to a gentle raise. It is not a rude word, just a spoken, everyday one. You will not see it much in school textbooks, and some people spell it hoik.
